Since the defeat of the Otterson Drive Extension in 2001, the Barber neighbors in Southwest Chico have worked with the City of Chico to establish and maintain a Creekside greenway park along Comanche Creek. (Hegan Lane Industrial Park owners had tried to get the city to build them a Creekside entrance to the industrial park and failed due to a hard won referendum that pitted money against people power.)

If you’re even a little sentimental about Chico’s history, it hurt seeing those rock walls along Bruce Road getting scooped up and destroyed like they were rubble. With views of the foothills to the east, the rock walls were the road’s most pleasant feature. It would have been nice to have a bike path running alongside them.

GUARDEDLY OPTIMISTIC - SHELTER SOLUTIONS MAY FINALLY BE COMING

The proposal includes 177 Pallet Shelters. There is a lot to love about these shelters; they are non-congregate, giving people a space with a lockable door to protect their belongings. They include heating and air so people can manage the temperatures inside. They provide people with a modicum of privacy, which can be a major barrier to people being willing to enter congregate shelters. They take around an hour to set up or take down and fold virtually flat.

Two young Chico police officers, on the night in 2017 they gunned Desmond Phillips down, told conflicting stories to investigators about what Phillips was doing in the seconds before he was slain.

Desmond Phillips was killed by police on March 17, 2017.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, apparently uncomfortable with those discrepancies, brought Desmond’s killers together nearly three weeks later for a group re-interview that “no competent investigator” would have conducted…
