Corruption at the Chico City Clerk’s Office

The Washington DC-based Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is partnering with the ACLU and others to draw attention to the human and civil rights violations taking place in the US as well as review relevant law, and Chico is the city they have chosen as an exemplar of poor leadership and bad policy leading to these violations.

Let the spin begin. Now that a federal judge has forced the Chico City Council to comply with the law, the right-wing PAC is springing into action to attempt to rehabilitate their crew. Of course, what they are saying is again not true…

The proposal includes 177 Pallet Shelters. There is a lot to love about these shelters; they are non-congregate, giving people a space with a lockable door to protect their belongings. They include heating and air so people can manage the temperatures inside. They provide people with a modicum of privacy, which can be a major barrier to people being willing to enter congregate shelters. They take around an hour to set up or take down and fold virtually flat.

In fact, 3 homeless people have been targeted and shot in the past month, and one was killed.

Rather than look for ways to address the issue, Citizens for a Safe Chico sent out a ghoulish, Halloween-ish email update full of misinformation, outright lies and plain old ugliness. Working together, and with another Cease and Desist letter, we were able to force the Chico City Council to roll back their illegal action disbanding the Climate Action Commission, and enact the Emergency Shelter Crisis Declaration, which protects the city from liability while sheltering on city-owned properties…

A Guardian analysis in 2015 found that homeless people were 6.5 times more likely to be killed by police than the rest of the population. And police largely don’t have an answer when encampment residents ask them where they should go, as most local jurisdictions lack the supportive and affordable housing necessary to house the more than 567,000 living unsheltered in the US.
