𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐝. 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐲. 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐈𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭 all 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝

When the city council rounded up and evicted people from camps in the dead of winter, when not one Chico shelter was accepting new clients, they were warned repeatedly that it was illegal, not to mention cruel and immoral. Those actions led directly to the latest costly lawsuit, and yet it appears they have still learned nothing..

We were frankly stunned when Chico City Attorney Vince Ewing, asked by Judge England to define shelter said, “shelter is a practically-available space for persons who are unhoused to go on a given day that would enable a city … to enforce its anticamping, sit/lie, and so forth ordinances.’

It was beyond telling. The city, led by a deluded and incompetent council, isn’t even making a pretense of addressing the problem. The ad hoc committee meetings that left us hopeful they were taking this seriously were a sham. People from all “sides” acknowledged the need for many of the same things: property storage, services, appropriate treatment for those who are ill, and more…but the city offered none of these things.

Instead, the city’s response was a remote, barren site with armed guards and no services whatsoever. They also did nothing to address the blatant illegality of existing ordinances. In issuing a preliminary injunction that prevents the city from enforcing those ordinances, the judge said:

“That definition does not pass the straight face test. Calling a plot of land a shelter does not make it so. Providing definitions of “shelter” according to the Merriam-Webster, Cambridge and Black’s Law dictionaries, he continued: “Under none of these definitions is the airport site a ‘shelter.’ It is an asphalt tarmac with no roof and no walls, no water and no electricity. It is an open space with what amounts to a large umbrella for some shade. It affords no real cover or protection to anyone.” See Chico News & Review article about this decision

This is the same council that, with the exception Councilmember Alex Brown completely ignored the harassment of a fellow Councilmember by local Citizens for a Safe Chico extremists, harassment that led to Scott Huber being forced to resign from his job and the council. Mayor Andrew Coolidge, Vice Mayor Kasey Reynolds - Chico City Councilmember and Councilmembers Sean Morgan and Deepika Tandon for Chico City Council refused to condemn this behavior, despite being asked repeatedly and directly by many in the community to do so.

This is the same council that has (again with the exception of Councilmember Alex Brown) completely ignored the fact that one of their members appears to have been living in Red Bluff since days after being sworn into office. This is the same council that is ignoring calls for an investigation into this apparent voter fraud and the same council who now expects us to trust them to appoint two new Councilmembers.
